Principles of the Cromship Network

1.    The novice investigator is a medical student or early career physician with an interest in combining clinical research and medical practice.

2.    The novice investigator has the expectation of serving as the first author of an original clinical research manuscript to be submitted to a peer-review journal.

3.    The novice investigator may also receive academic credit at their home site for this clinical research education experience, if applicable.

4.    There should be a home mentorwith the expected benefit of serving as or designating the last author of the original clinical research manuscript.

5.    There should be an away mentor identified at the away site.

6.    The home and away mentors share the responsibility of facilitating the process by which the novice investigator identifies the clinical research question and the source(s) of data or database(s) needed to answer that question.

7.    As needed, the home and away mentors should negotiate the responsibility for funding of the novice investigator's project.

8.    The duration of the clinical research education experience should be approximately half an academic year.

9.    An appropriate portion of this time should occur at the away site.

10.  There should be regular research meetings, including tele/video conferencing in some form, among the home and away mentors and the novice investigator
